We have many dogs at the Refuge that are not pictured on our site. Please contact the Refuge or submit your adoption application to learn about all the terriers at the Refuge.
Russell Refuge Needs Your Help
Russell Refuge, Inc. provides temporary shelter to Jack Russell Terriers in the northeastern United States that are no longer wanted or have been placed in public shelters. We provide medical care before adoption and find suitable homes for terriers in our care. Our organization is funded entirely by donations. These donations are used for temporary housing, spaying/neutering, transportation from shelters, veterinarian treatments, food, etc.
If you are a donor, you may be able to increase your donation with a matching gift made by your employer. Employees wishing to secure a matching gift from their company must initiate the process directly with their employer on our behalf (inquire with your human resources, charitable contributions, or payroll department).

It is a place of peace and understanding, offering the opportunity to heal from the traumas imposed on them simply for being what they are.
We have many dogs here at the Refuge that are not pictured. We may have the perfect dog for you! If you are interested in the possible adoption of a terrier, please complete an on-line adoption application. Do not be shy about adding additional comments. It will help us to get to know you better. Our goal is to place terriers in happy, forever homes where the adopting party and dogs are both winners. New York, New York – It is evident in the global world of business today that situational ethics, moral and cultural relativism have resulted in the elimination of Catholic ethical standards in business. The problem of ethics in public relations is oft held out as the model for the worst of the worst in business. I will emphatically state upfront this is a reputation well earned. We will not offer any excuse or blame shift back to client because in the end it is the ethics of the public relations practitioner, firm.
Catholic public relations professionals, it is imperative we do not engage in situational ethics, moral and cultural relativism by, looking the other way, giving our nod of approval to Individuals, Groups, Organizations, Businesses, Governments or support in any other manner the creation and promotion of their “Mask”. When we are silent, we betray who we are as Catholics, our Catholic Faith our clients, becoming in the eyes of those watching us no different than those engaging in situational ethics, moral and cultural relativism.
“Nothing in all the world is as relentless in unmasking a false way of life as war. It strips men and institutions bare and exposes them in their naked reality. It is easy to believe in any theory until it is subjected to the acid test of experience. Just as some children will not accept their mother’s caution that they must not eat too many bananas, but learn the lesson the hard way by becoming so sick that they can never look at a banana again, so too the world has tasted the bitter dregs of its own philosophy and learned by tragedy what it refuses to learn by counsel. In a false peace a false philosophy survives; but when war empties its seven vials of wrath upon the world, spurious faiths dissolve and Babels crumble. This World War is doing that very thing. Remember how our false prophets a few years ago were saying that progress was natural and inevitable; that evil and sin were just relics of the fall in evolution; that the wars of the past were but the growing pains of civilization and we would soon grow out of their immaturity; that goodness increases with the years, that evil and error decline; that evolution takes the place of Providence, science supplants grace, and psychoanalysis eradicates guilt; that evil, still spoken of by the Catholic Church, was due to ignorance and could be cured by education and improved glands; that the Catholic opposition to divorce as destructive of the family was due to its reactionism and its ignorance of the new social theories; that the Kingdom of God was on earth and that the primitive man who became civilized man would soon be the superman needing no God, because God is man and man is God; that history was an uninterrupted progress at the beginning of which there were millions of evils, then later there were only half a million, about the year 1950 there would be perhaps only ten thousand, and in the very near future, according to the major prophet H. G. “This brings us to a consideration of the economic and political principle of the Christian order. The Christian order starts with man; all other orders start with a class. Capitalism and Communism, for example, though opposite in their directions, like branches of a tree, are nevertheless rooted in the same economic principle, that a class is to take all. Communism is only rotted Capitalism. Under Capitalism the employer takes all; under Marxian Socialism the employee takes all.
The Christian economic order starts with man. Its basic principle, is this: Economic activity is not the end of human life, but the Servant of human life. Therefore, the true primary end of economic production is not profit, but the satisfaction of human needs. In other words, production exists primarily for consumption, and only secondarily for profits. The old order was: Consumption exists for production and production for finance. The Christian order reverses it: Finance exists for production, production for consumption. This demands a revolutionary change of the whole economic order, because it affirms the primacy of the human over the economic. Its starting principle is that the right of a man to a living wage is prior to the right of return on investments.

Born in the fine southern state of Virginia back in 1980 and reborn in 1998 these guys know their business. In the famous scene in Book 8 of the Confessions, Augustine encounters the Life of Anthony, the African monk. Augustine sees that he must withdraw from involvement in public life. He cites Ponticianus who, in the city of Treves, on reading this Life of Anthon, asked himself: “What do we hope to gain by all the efforts we make? What are we looking for? Southern Rock has risen up to fill the great void in music today. As part of The Southern Rock Community, Southern Fury has stormed across the music scene defying convention yet never forgetting from whence they came, whom to call brother, sister, their Loud~N~Proud loyal fans, The Southern Furions. Fan ‘em up on Facebook…BE SOUTHERN FURION!”-Legendary Radio Icon Zach Martin.
Southern Fury was born back in the early 80’s in the sleepy little town of Springfield Virginia. It all began when Dave “DJ” Fernandez got a call from a college buddy of his named Jamie Magarry, who was playing bass in punk rock bands at the time. Jamie knew of DJ’s musical interests and told him that he had found two guys living in the area that were interested in forming a southern rock band. This was literally “music” to DJ’s ears.
Jaimie told DJ that Tom Fowler, a southern rock lead guitarist, and Steve Kerndt, a southern rock drummer, had been playing together since they were kids. Jaimie suggested that they all get together, jam, see how things felt and hear how they sounded. That jam turned into the nucleus of the band that would one day be known, around the world, as Southern Fury.
Once the guys decided to form a band, they began rehearsing in Tom’s basement every chance they could, learning Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels songs and a variety of other southern rock cover tunes. As time went on they also added a few of DJ’s original songs and the true Southern Fury sound started to grow. To help develop that traditional southern rock sound they decided to add a second lead guitarist, named Dave Havil. Southern Fury was finally complete and the boys began to dig up some gigs to play around town.
Their debut performance was the “now famous Kappa Sigma Fraternity party” at George Mason University. The setting was The Library performance hall in downtown Fairfax Virginia. The place was packed with a crazed crowd of college kids who had never heard of Southern Fury before… but would never forget them after the show. The band rocked hard that day, sounded great and gained the respect of their first few fans!
Of course, like any start up band, it was a bit slow going at first… But the guys loved playing out and the more they played the more of a following they got. Unfortunately time and a lack of cash, in the form of good paying gigs, began to take its toll and Southern Fury started showing signs of disbanding. It began when Jamie announced that he was leaving the band in search of a money-making punk band (his first love). Next, Dave Havil announced that he was moving out of state and joining another southern rock band called Sidewinder.
It wasn’t long after those two events that DJ, Steve and Tom decided to put their time and energies into other outside activities (like earning a living) and give Southern Fury a rest. Of course no one knew that “rest” would last almost 15 years…
Over the next 15 years DJ, Tom and Steve would develop their own professional careers outside of the music business. But music was never out of their hearts or minds. As fate would have it, a strange series of events would eventually bring three of them back together again… and Southern Fury back to life.
As it turns out, one day while DJ was working at the office, an employee of his named Scott, persuaded DJ to teach him to play guitar. As DJ spent more and more time teaching Scott the fundamentals, he began to realize how much he missed playing. He also realized that at age 41, that he had better get back in the game before it was too late.
As luck would have it DJ discovered that a good friend of his, named Dave Spindel, played bass guitar and had indicated he wanted to join him and Scott to form a new band. Soon after they added a drummer named Carmello and a lead/rhythm guitarist named Jeff. Although they had a lot playing together, it just didn’t sound good enough for DJ.
After many attempts to create a band that had that same southern sound that DJ desired. He concluded that some changes would have to be made to the current lineup of players. Once DJ gave Scott, and Carmello the bad news, he and Dave Spindel spent the next couple of months working with jeff and a new drummer named John Marshall. After a few more shows John decided to leave the band due to family obligations. So they continued auditioning of a number of musicians but they just couldn’t find the right mix of styles and players.
Frustrated with the current sound of the band DJ placed a call to Tom Fowler to catch up and see if Tom had been playing his guitar. As it turns out, Tom had just recently dusted off his guitar and amps and been playing again at home, so he thought it would be cool to check out jamming with a band again. Once DJ heard Tom play again, he knew he was on the right track. Now all they needed was to find a drummer. Tom suggested to DJ, to give original Southern Fury drummer, Steve Kerndt, an audition. DJ agreed to check it out.
So Steve showed up, dusted his drums off and in no time at all was rocking with the band just like the good old days. It didn’t take long and Southern Fury was back at it again. In late 1998 the band found themselves on stage, opening for acts like .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Dickey Betts, Griderswitch and many others legendary rockers.
The next ten years would prove to be the bands best years ever… writing new material, recording CD’s, playing live gigs and giving their fans what they were missing for so many years… Original southern rock that kicked-ass! With the acquisition of Dan Aylestock on bass, Southern Fury was back in the saddle again and cranking out their new original sound.

Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, president of the USCCB, sharply criticized the decision by the Obama administration in which it “ordered almost every employer and insurer in the country to provide sterilization and contraceptives, including some abortion-inducing drugs, in their health plans….Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience. This shouldn’t happen in a land where free exercise of religion ranks first in the Bill of Rights.”

USCCB Responds to Misleading White House Blog Entry
“White House Misrepresents Its Own Contraceptive Mandate“
The Obama administration, to justify its widely-criticized mandate for contraception and sterilization coverage in private health plans, has posted a set of false and misleading claims on the White House blog (“Health Reform, Preventive Services, and Religious Institutions,” February 1). This new USCCB fact sheet quotes and responds to each claim in turn.
More Background
The HHS has issued a rule forcing nearly all private health plans to include coverage for all FDA-approved prescription contraceptive drugs and devices, as well as surgical sterilization. These are listed among “preventive services for women” that all health plans will have to cover without co-pays or other cost-sharing — regardless of whether the insurer, the employer or other plan sponsor, or even the woman herself objects to such coverage.
The exemption provided for “religious employers” is so narrow that it fails to cover the vast majority of faith-based organizations, including Catholic hospitals, universities, and service organizations that help millions every year. Ironically, not even Jesus & his disciples would have qualified.
During the public comment period last fall, the bishops’ grassroots campaign alone generated over 57,000 comments to HHS opposing their mandate.
Now that the Administration has refused to recognize the Constitutional conscience rights of organizations and individuals who oppose the mandate, the bishops are now urging Catholics and others of good will to fight this unprecedented attack on conscience rights and religious liberty.
More than 400 Catholic leaders have called on Congress and the Administration to protect conscience rights in health care. The open letter appeared as a full page ad featuring over 150 of those leaders in the New York Times and the Washington Post on December 21.
