The Rose…Revisited in Two Parts
Music and Paint: Forbidden Touch, Visceral Love (The Young Brothers and Jacqui Faye)

ROSE BY JACQUI FAYE 2007 Used with Permission(s) Note: Please respect the artist. Do not copy or use ROSE (2007) Jacqui Faye without artists express written consent.
The Rose
Complexity of The Rose revealed in her Simplicity;
Simplicity of The Rose lay bare her Complexity;
Bursting [Rosebud] forth into her majestic full bloom, regal among all flowers;
Exciting the senses, filling the heart;
Soft, silky petals, moist with cool, refreshing morning dew;
Fragrant, gentle sweet aroma fills the air, rides upon the warm summer breeze;
Full expression of life, awash with vibrant color;
Ecstasy of soul her inner beauty persuades;
Joy in the heart, The Rose in a well-tended garden lay ;
Alas, of someone else her heart and beauty goes;
Forbidden to the touch, Visceral Love…The Rose

Lord Byron on The Art of Maite Salido Gusi…She Walks in Beauty
She Walks in Beauty
By Lord Byron
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
Artist Interview:
Artist’s name?
Maite Salido Gusi
Age?
23
Where are you from?
Hometown: Jerez De La Frontera, Andalucia, Spain
Currently residing in Madrid, Spain
You have an interesting choice of names on your Facebook page, can you give us any background on this? Justification? Is it for shock value?
I have always been connected to art in any of its forms. I used to do classic and contemporary dance, I have participated in a few plays with my school and since I can recall I have been writing, painting and drawing but in a very inconsistent basis. After a very rough patch, at the end of January one day I decided to sit myself down and start using the blank canvas and watercolors that I had forgotten in my room, and I have not been able to stop painting since then. That is why I used “Art Diarrhea” as the name for my Facebook page; I wanted to show verbally my artistic incontinence, the fact that I have not been able to control myself or to help myself lately when it comes to painting. It just happens, whether I want it or not to happen. I did not name it like that for shock value, though. If anything, I think it is funny.
What are some of your favorite artists and artworks?
I have to admit that I still have a huge lot to learn when it comes to painting and art in general; I am just a newbie taking a shy pic into this world. I do have a few artists that I admire, like Van Gogh (The Starry Night and Starry Night over the Rhone are my favorites), Claude Monet (The Pont at Montgeron), Wassily Kandinsky (I find its Composition VI astonishing) or Franz Von Stuck (The Kiss of the Sphinx). Most of those art works you can actually see together at the Hermitage Museum. I’m also in love with Agnes Cecile artwork and her watercolors outbursts. I find them powerful, fierce and passionate but delicate at the same time.
What inspires your art?
Anything can inspire what I paint, from a picture to an advertisement. I find inspiration in odd places and in weird times. I would be coming from college walking and see a Yves Saint Lauren campaign and I would immediately picture in my head a much more violent or shocking image from it. Most of the time music is in the background of my paintings, though. In fact, most of my work is named after a song, like “Lonely Hands” or “Babylon”. I think music sets the mood and the ambiance of what I do, it is always connected somehow. Also, lately I have been getting very interesting ideas from writers and literature. There are some Bukowski and Edgar Allan Poe stories that I would like to blend and integrate in future paintings.
Do you believe that art needs to be relevant? How so?
I do not think it needs to be relevant, I think art is already relevant. Everyone has had and will have some kind of connection in their lives to a form of art, whether they’re aware of it or not. Art is not only painting or drawing. I have a much wider definition for it. To me, art is music, books, movies, TV shows, advertising, philosophy, poetry, oratory… Art is whatever makes you think, whatever makes you contemplate a different point of view, whatever enables you to feel like the artist wanted you to feel and whatever takes you out of your comfort zone.
Use of colors….Your Album is titled “Black and White” where you do use color you use red to depict some very powerful emotions, hints of violence and intensity. Red is also traditionally associated with romance and love. Are there any special stories or connections you want to share with these art works?
I started painting in black and white because I felt in control of it, I felt like black and white myself. Black and White represents the transition from darkness to purity and the ambiguous place of grey. It is melancholic and soft; it allows you to focus on the feeling and the actual meaning of the whole painting without being distracted by the intensity of colors and techniques. It is raw and simple, and at the time I felt just like that. I do use red sometimes to highlight what I am feeling when I am painting. I don’t mean for the red parts of my work to reminisce love at all. If anything, I want to romanticize the concept of violence, rage or revenge, not directed towards other people but to oneself. Sometimes it is inevitable to feel like two different people, like you are your own antagonist and you find yourself boycotting your own life, ideas and projects, so you can not help but be mad at you, and feel betrayed and disgusted. I believe there is a beauty in that confrontation as it shows that there is a struggle for identity, for becoming and knowing oneself.
“Heart Full of Wine”….Jerez is sherry.. are we to assume that this is red sherry? Also, the highlighted words in the background…”No Mas Ahora” = No More time? Without translating the entire picture can you give us an idea why there is no more time? From a casual glance I get the impression that what we are dealing with here is a sort of dysfunctional relationship? Am I correct?
It is sherry, but unfortunately I do not think there is a red kind of sherry, which would have been perfect for it. I will leave to the imagination what kind of sherry it is; Fino, Manzanilla, Amontillado, Oloroso or Pedro Ximenez. My favorite is Pedro Ximenez though! (advertising my home products!)
Heart Full of Wine represents the heartbreak after an unexpected and therefore hurtful breakup. It shows the process from confusion and hope to hate and later to self-respect, the road that leads you to turn that unreturned and unidirectional love to yourself. Hence, “No más. Ahora yo”, which means “No more. Now me”. Again, here I try to emphasize the duality of personality that arises when confronted by rejection (you hate and despise whoever rejected you, but still seek for his or her approval and love) and I treat love and the need to feel loved as a drug that you have to get rid of in order to focus on yourself and to find that love in no one else but you.

CLICK~2~PLAY: THE 2012 ROVER BY PIPAPELLI
In a tiny shop at the alley door, amidst the shadows deep.
A craftsman works a magic spell, a history to repeat.
With darkened wood and elephant tooth and skin and reed and twine.
He carves and turns and binds and sews, with stitches strong and fine.
Each drone is turned and combed and smoothed, and checked for proper height.
The chanter carved of finest wood, and trimmed with silver, bright.
When all is done, the pipes are one, but one task left, is all.
He places in the bagpipe’s heart, a piece of his own soul.
When the pipes then call, to a widow’s heart, the tears give rise, then fall.
When the pipes give call, to the clansmen swords, with honor, they give all.
When the pipes give wail, at their maker’s pall, his breath has rattled last.
His soul still lives in the piper’s call, alive, and safe, and fast. -The Bagpipe Maker D. L. Grothaus

Roads Go Ever On
Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.Roads go ever ever on,
Under cloud and under star.
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen,
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green,
And trees and hills they long have known.The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with weary feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone.
Let others follow, if they can!
Let them a journey new begin.
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet.”

Metaphysics Be Damned, On the Head of a Pin Dancing: Aingeal óg by Caroline Sheerin
Metaphysicists endlessly debate the question put forth, in its various forms, how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?
My piece Aingeal óg puts to rest the question not in absolute terms but in sufficiency to end it.
I am referring to the men and women who have lost their young lives during warfare, especially the drafted youth of 1940′s America and Britain.
Most certainly, we have lost entire Aingeal óg generations to feed the Meat Grinder, The Machine of War.
On the Head of a Pin…Aingeal óg Dancing. -Caroline Sheerin

By Wilfred Owen
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons. No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells,
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,—
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.
The pallor of girls’ brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme;
But you shall shine more bright in these contents Than unswept stone besmear’d with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn, And broils root out the work of masonry, Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn The living record of your memory.
‘Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity Shall you pace forth;
Your praise shall still find room Even in the eyes of all posterity That wear this world out to the ending doom .
So, till the judgment that yourself arise, You live in this, and dwell in lovers’ eyes.
