About Greg Kelly:

His professional experience includes specializing in public relations, international relations, public/government affairs, corporate communications, and relationship building from the local-to-international level. He has worked as an assistant to Benjamin A. Gilman, former Chairman of the House International Relations Committee and a member of Congress from 1973 to 2003. He is also the former Manager of Public Relations, Marketing and Advertising for the Korea National Tourism Organization where his duties included speech writing for senior Korean government officials and establishing and maintaining working relationships with various foreign and domestic companies, government agencies and media outlets.

Mr. Kelly graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from State University of New York at Potsdam where he majored in political science and minored in communications.

Greg Kelly is a combat veteran having served in the United States Army with the rank of Sergeant in the “America’s Guard of Honor”  82nd Airborne Division (Grenada) and “Second-2-None” 2nd Infantry Division (Korea).

GOOGLE+ Why We Left Facebook and Never Looked Back

The Public Relations, Marketing and Communications fields are result driven. We cannot speak directly about all fields but for those we are engaged, our client base is encompasses,  International Relations, Public Diplomacy, Culture and Culinary Arts, Music, Tourism and Travel, Religion, Government Systems, Community Affairs, Non-Profits, Celebrities and Personalities; the power of GOOGLE+  at our finger tips is second to none.  Obviously, there are other fields but we would have to speak about them in generalizations because they are outside of our focus.

The GOOGLE+ superior operating platform, applications, usability, analytics, reach and Google works with you, they want your business unlike the prevailing Facebook attitude that you work for them.

GOOGLE+ offers you audience reach without all the clutter and noise found on Facebook.  There is noticeable lack of ‘The Jerry’ in and among a significant portion of discussions.  While no system is perfect there is a civility among GOOGLE+ users overall that is refreshing to experience.

In Public Relations, Marketing and Communications we must always be ahead of the curve.  One of the complaints concerning GOOGLE+ is exactly why we are on it and get our clients on it.  Just as MySpace became a morass, Facebook has become an extremely costly quagmire.

1. Facebook limits your reach to your friends and fans.

2. Many believe because they have invested, we say wasted, so much time in the mud with Facebook they erroneously believe it would be too costly to move on to GOOGLE+.

3. The more information, photos, etc. individuals and companies pump into Facebook the greater Facebook’s rights to other people’s property and the bigger profit for them off your information.

4. GOOGLE+ encourages Thought, Exploration of Ideas where Facebook encourages just the opposite actively suppressing Independent Thinking and Exploration of Ideas.

For all his hype the thing Zuckerberg is missing is that Facebook users are a dissatisfied, fed up, frustrated enormous group of people and businesses searching for something better and that something better is GOOGLE+

Public Relations Gone Bad…Political messiahs, Propaganda Machines

As people around the world call politicians messiah let us keep in mind not too long ago another nation created their own political messiah….Triumph des Willens (1935) – Triumph of the Will

 

 

Triumph of the Will (German: Triumph des Willens) is a propaganda film made by Leni Riefenstahl. It chronicles the 1934 Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg, which was attended by more than 700,000 Nazi supporters. The film contains excerpts from speeches given by various Nazi leaders at the Congress, including portions of speeches by Adolf Hitler, interspersed with footage of massed party members. Hitler commissioned the film and served as an unofficial executive producer; his name appears in the opening titles. The overriding theme of the film is the return of Germany as a great power, with Hitler as the True German Leader who will bring glory to the nation.

Triumph of the Will was released in 1935 and rapidly became one of the best-known examples of propaganda in film history. Riefenstahl’s techniques, such as moving cameras, the use of long focus lenses to create a distorted perspective, aerial photography, and revolutionary approach to the use of music and cinematography, have earned Triumph recognition as one of the greatest films in history. Riefenstahl won several awards, not only in Germany but also in the United States, France, Sweden, and other countries. The film was popular in the Third Reich and elsewhere, and has continued to influence movies, documentaries, and commercials to this day.

Heard on National Public Radio today was their Short Story program hosted by John LithgowTwo Words was the featured short story by Isabel Allende.  Aside from telling you her main character wished to become a writer and Sell Words we will not spoil your reading of it which we highly recommend.

Public Relations.  We do not sell words however, words are the main vehicle for our transmission of thoughts, ideas to inform and persuade audiences.  For the purposes of this post we are focusing on words, obviously we have other communication vehicles.

The public relations writer must be the antithesis of Allende’s quote at the top of this post to be successful.  It is imperative to transmit the relationship between events, consequences of the desired action, The Now is the past, present and future represented one-dimensionally yet still viewable in their individual respective space-time continuum, apply the lessons of history.

Public relations and research are inextricably linked.  The dilemma with research is found in the difficulty of finding clean data.  Empirical data such as history is victim of the onslaught of revisionism by the controlling powers at that precise time in history and their agenda(s).  This is not to suggest that hard data is pure and untainted.  Paid for outcomes in science by governments, special interest groups and corporations has made it difficult to obtain clean data.

A Polluted data stream brings us back to words and allows us to discuss ethics as well.  If the data streams are polluted than ethically, the public relations writer must introduce the opposing data sets and then explain why one is closer to the truth over the other.

The Art of Language in society today.  We refer to it more succinctly as The Lost Art of Language.  Popular culture language it seems has regressed way past the Neanderthals with little relief in sight from government-controlled schools.  What passes for verbal and body language is a series of grunts, guttural noises combined with wilds inspired body language. One-Hundred Forty characters on Twitter or whatever slogan a person deems witty and clever that fits on a graphic uploaded on Facebook is what passes for written communication.

Let us assume your target audience can read at least at the twelfth grade level and comprehend what they are reading.  For the public relations writer to succeed the idea, thought, desired action needs to be embedded in a story.  From science to tourism, the arts to business and government the most successful public relations campaigns come from storytelling in the more traditional sense.

With this trend, the public relations writer should also research and use a quote from a historical figure, the arts and literature that lends credence to the story.  More importantly transmits the relationship between events, consequences of the desired action, The Now as presented in the third paragraph as the past, present and future represented one-dimensionally yet still viewable in their individual respective space-time continuum.

Symbiotic Relationship Storytelling in Public Relations

This morning we came across an important blog post on Writers Write titled Six Reasons To Embrace The Power Of Stories.

As a Public Relations firm we have embraced this paradigm of storytelling for our fee-based clients as well as our barter service clients and pro bono friends in the new media.

This is not to say however that The Press Release has come and gone but as the relevance of the Old Guard, Mainstream Media fades so too does the value of the traditional press release.  Storytelling as pointed out on the Writers Write post becomes that much more important to any successful PR-MKT Campaign. (See graphic above)

Key component to the success of a PR-MKT Storytelling campaign include the symbiotic relationship of compelling content. For our clients we deploy the tactic of Pairings with music, art, literature and culture.  This is beneficial for the business, corporation attempting to project a more human touch and has proven to be essential in cross cultural promotions and public diplomacy campaigns.

While we have met with great success with the storytelling paradigm online, it has also met with great success in its practical application for Cultural Festivals/Events, Distillery/Brewery product launch/promotion, Charity Fundraiser/Awareness and Culinary Arts events.

Return of The Blog: ‘MySpace Malaise’ Infection Spreads to Facebook, Twitter, etc…

Confirmation of the ‘MySpace Malaise’ infection of Facebook, Twitter is readily identified through a series of random and specific data reference searches in scientific, business publications as well as the general population on the internet.

What had been identified as causes is of no surprise:

1. The constant onslaught of hype concerning the newest and best “Thing” in social media. How many social media accounts do you have? How much time do you spend trying to keep up?

2. Blogs/Blogging have proven to be key in the success of Public Relations-Marketing-Communications Campaigns.  This allows the full message to be transmitted to the intended audience with its unique flexibility in link backs, visuals, texts, and audio components while allowing for general audience, media pick-ups as well with one-click.

3. Censorship: Everyone knows the notorious censorship of Free Thought, Expression of Ideas and Opinions on Facebook.  If you are critical of certain agendas of Government, in Politics-Current Events, Religion, or enjoy the freedom of expression of The Arts, Music, and Literature then Facebook tells you what they will allow, blogging gets you around this hideous censorship.  Facebook dictates to you who you can share with if they deem you as not ‘fitting’ their agenda.

4. Formatting: Blogs offer a greater variety of options and controls over your formatting whereas Facebook DICTATES formatting to you.

In summary, if you desire better results of your time invested, get out and enjoy life more, the key is BLOG and SHARE to your other social media accounts.

The very first issue in Consumer Public Relations-Marketing-Advertising is to identify for the client is the product, service, destination relevant to the consumer:

  • Need
  • Desire
  • Habit
  • Lifestyle
  • Is there a market for the product, service (Authoritative research required.  Everyone believes they have the greatest product, service, destination).

Advertising/Creative:

  • Identify your consumer target
  • Does it relate to your consumer target
  • Does it fulfill the relevance topics above
  • Does it capture consumer attention
  • Set your product, service, destination apart from competition

Frequency:

Old Media, New Media, Social Media…Frequency Matters!

The 1X Press Release, Blog Post, etc. is a place to start it is not the end all, be all.  Should not be counted on as sole means of message delivery.

There are advocates of a 5-7 times psychology model however this will leave your client disappointed in the effectiveness and results of the campaign as well as a waste of fiscal resources that may be spent better elsewhere.  The 5-7X Timer is the impulsive buyer, the late night infomercial consumer.

3.  Do not ‘Write-up’ on Facebook notes or other spaces, it is a waste of time.  If you must have a ‘Write-up’ link to an outside blog such as WordPress, Blogger, etc. Make sure the logo or at least a picture or graphic is available on the post to show up when linking on Facebook.

4. Make the majority of your Facebook posts a photo upload with your ‘message’ in the description with links.

5. Tag ‘em:  The other method is the tagging of the photo for wider spread dissemination of the message.
